Challenge
The sparrow population has declined by nearly half since the 1970s. The challenge was to bring back bird songs into dense areas of cities by creating innovative sparrow habitat.
The Singing Branch is a sustainable musical instrument as well as housing for the 21st century city-living sparrows.
Using existing lamp-posts in the urban fabric, the branches clip-on, to become beautiful “tree-like sculptures”, while providing comfortable housing for sparrows.
The Sparrow habitat is made from moulded plywood, and supported by a carbon fibre reinforced plastic frame. It is economically designed to clip as a composition using the same single component.
The project was shortlisted in Holbeck Urban Wildlife competition, which invited Architects & Designers to submit proposals for innovative solutions.
